“What is a Good Looking Penis?” That was the title of a recent scientific study. No, seriously – researchers investigated what women look for in a penis, and there seems to be a lot more to it than just size and girth.
The study, published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, was part of a larger project that focuses on men with surgically corrected hypospadias, a disorder where a man’s urethral opening is not in the normal position at the top of the penis. Researchers were keen to know what penile aspects were important to women and whether they thought men who had undergone surgically corrected hypospadias had “abnormal” looking penises.
They asked 105 women to rank the importance of eight penile aspects on a 5-point scale ranging from very unimportant (1) to very important (5). These aspects included length, girth and position and shape of urinary opening known as the meatus. Researchers also asked about the shape of glans and penile skin, scrotum, pubic hair, and general “cosmetic” appearance. What general cosmetic appearance means is anyone’s guess, but it’s probably best not to google ‘ugly scrotum’ if you’re trying to find out.
The findings suggest that women find general cosmetic appearance the most important aspect, while position and shape of the meatus are considered the least important aspect of penile appearance. Contrary to the cliche about size, length was only rated as the sixth most important aspect, girth was rated third, and pubic hair was rated second. However, the study was small, so it’s difficult to generalize the findings.
Overall, when trying to figure out what makes a penis perfect, researchers found there was “no single penile aspect that is essential.”
