The highly anticipated news is finally here!
The Government of Ghana has eased restrictions on the operations of cinemas and theatres in the country. This follows months of engagement with stakeholders in the industry.
This news comes after such intense agitation within the creative industry, especially from the quarters or filmmakers, who have groused for months – on the continuous closure of the cinemas and theatres.
Restrictions have been eased but the directive from the Government comes with some condition(s).
A document sighted by this portal, www.entertainmentgh.com indicates that operators have been prompted to apply for permit to operate from the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA).
It will be recalled that the President in his last address to the nation on 16th May 20201, tasked the GTA and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to finalize guidelines for the operation of cinemas and theatres.
Checks by www.entertainmentgh.com show that these guidelines have now been finalized and operators can apply and be granted permits to operate based on the agreed protocols.
-Operator(s) would apply to the Ghana Tourism Authority for an operational permit with attached guidelines.
-Upon receipt of the application, a team of Inspectors would visit the Cinema/Theatre to assess compliance to the operational guidelines.
-Permits issued can be withdrawn as a result of non-compliance to the operational guidelines.
This will come as welcome news for industry stakeholders who have in recent times appealed to the President through the Ministry of Tourism for the easing of restrictions.
