It is no secret that Kwabena Akwaboah, who is in the run for the ‘New Artiste of the Year’ category in the forthcoming 2014 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, is no novice or tenderfoot in the music industry.
The gentleman’s accomplishment within the industry surpasses many other artistes who have been in the trade for so many years. It is also no news that Akwaboah penned the award-winning songs for the likes of Becca, SP Kofi Sarpong and Efya. ‘Best in Me’ performed by Efya won the ‘Record of the Year’ at the 2013 VGMA, ‘Ayeyi Ndwom’ for Superintendent Kofi Sarpong and ‘Daa Ke Daa’ performed by Becca won their respective categories at the 2010 Ghana Music Awards.
What is news, however, is the revelation by the award-winning songwriter that he wrote all these songs and gave it to the performing artistes for free, without charging them anything – not a dime.
Making the disclosure to a stunned Afia Schwarnezzenger on ETV, Akwaboah maintained that the ‘Best in Me’ song written for Efya, which saw the female artiste shoot to invaluable heights in international show business with her vocal delivery on the song – was given to her for free. SP Kofi Sarpong made such an impact with the ‘Ayeyi Ndwom’ track, making a bold statement for slow-tempo gospel tracks and he also got his award-winning and career-defining song for free – no charge.
Before ‘Daa ke Daa’, there were other songs released by Becca but there’s no disputing the obvious fact that Akwaboah’s ‘Daa ke Daa’ made the sultry songstress a household name. She took the song for free too.
Kwabena Akwaboah failed to express whether there exists some kind of contractual agreement between himself and these artistes which gives him some intellectual rights to the award-winning songs.
He is the grandson of highlife legend Kwabena Akwaboah and son of the legendary Kwadwo Akwaboah, a songwriter, keyboardist and music icon formerly with the ever famous Marriots International Band.
Kwabena Akwaboah Jnr., who is also a masterful keyboardist, has shared the stage with international artistes including Hugh Masekela and John Legend. Akwaboah has two nominations in the forthcoming VGMAs, ‘’New Artiste of the Year’ and ‘Record of The Year’ respectively.
